Long and medium shots, long takes on hidden cameras, and no close-ups lend a sterile air to a film that shows the ordinary lives of the family that lives next door to Auschwitz; the family of camp commandant, Rudolf Höss. This is not a conventional film telling the story of the Holocaust, nor even just the part played by Auschwitz. It shows how it is possible that the Holocaust could be perpetrated.
